Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) has released details about the new PlayStation 3 (PS3 model #CECH-2000A). The svelte charcoal black PS3 Slim sports a much smaller case and a 120GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The new PlayStation 3 Slim is slated for retail release on September 1, 2009, in North America, Europe/ PAL territories at a discounted retail prices (RRP) of US$299 and €299. The PS3 Slim will drop in Japan on September 3, 2009 (odd, in that Sony usually releases in Japan first), with a retail price of 29,980 yen (including tax).

In a bold move, Sony has discounted the remaining stock of 80GB PS3's to US$299 from August 18 and €299 from August 19. Also in North America, the price of PS3 with 160GB HDD will be reduced to a RRP of US$399 from August 18. Of course one has to ask if it isn't worth waiting a couple of weeks to own the new version of the PS3 Slim with a 120GB HDD for the same prices as the 80GB PS3 Phat.

According to publisher, "The internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned, achieving a much slimmer and lighter body. Compared to the very first PS3 model with 60GB HDD, the internal volume as well as its thickness and weight are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds. Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise. While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with textured surface finish, giving an all new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home."

RED DEAD REDEMPTION R3 Available Now.

It’s one thing for a video game to get a glowing write-up from enthusiast websites like Gamespot, IGN or 1Up. Those are game reviews written by gamers, for gamers, using the sort of inside baseball shorthand that game fans understand and expect. But when the New York Times — the Gray Lady herself — calls a video game a “tour de force,” it’s something special. Isn’t it?

In stores today, Rockstar Games’ Western epic Red Dead Redemption is already racking up some of the most positive reviews of any game released in the last year or two, with a 95% score on review aggregator site metacritic.com. In his review for the New York Times, critic Seth Schiesel calls Red Dead Redemption “a new standard for sophistication and ambition in electronic gaming” and ends his review with, “In the more than 1,100 articles I have written for this newspaper since 1996, I have never before called anything a tour de force. Yet there is no more succinct and appropriate way to describe Red Dead Redemption.”

Schiesel is a fairly unique bird in that he covers video games for a large mainstream newspaper audience. (I suppose I could also be considered such a bird, but you don’t see me sneaking references to classical music conductors into my reviews. Like I’d have any idea who they are.) I like his reviews because they’re articulate and well-written, and because I find it useful to observe how he straddles the line between making his reviews interesting to gamers but also accessible to non-gaming readers. It’s something I struggle with every week, and I still don’t think I have the hang of it.

While I don’t need Schiesel’s thumbs-up to convince me to play Red Dead Redemption — it’s made by the ridiculously talented people at Rockstar Games (of Grand Theft Auto fame), and it’s a follow-up to 2004’s Read Dead Revolver, which I loved — it is interesting to see the reaction his review has garnered. Some folks are tweeting about it as if to say, “Look! The New York Times says video games are a serious and worthy form of entertainment!” while others are scoffing at Schiesel’s tendency to overstate how good some games really are. (He definitely does tend to toss around superlatives with abandon.)

But mainly I just like the fact that the New York Times does video game reviews, full stop. I’m terribly bored with the whole “are games art?” hand-wringing nonsense, but I am glad that, if nothing else, some media outlets do put games on the same level as movies, TV and music when it comes to coverage. (Not to toot any horns here, but I don’t know of any other major news outlet in Canada — or perhaps even North America — that generates two full pages of video games coverage per week like we do.)

I don’t need the New York Times to tell me what games are great, but someone out there probably does. And hopefully he or she will be inspired to pick up a copy of Red Dead Redemption. Which is exactly what I’m going to do right now. Giddyup.

Harvest Festival Month

Sony Being Sued?

Sony had pulled the plug from 'Other OS' feature in PlayStation 3 console with firmware 3.21 update that created quite a ruckus last month. Disappointed with that move, Anthony Ventura from California has filed a suit against Sony for "intentional disablement of the valuable functionality originally advertised as available" in the PlayStation 3 console, reported IGN. Lawsuit says that Sony's act of removing 'Other OS' support was more concerned with potential piracy.


However, Sony had clearly stated that the removal of Other OS feature was simply for security reasons. That didn't scare PS3 hackers as GeoHot demonstrated custom firmware for retaining 'Other OS' support on PS3.


The lawsuit states, "On information and belief, contrary to Sony's statement, the 'security concerns' did not involve a threat to PS3 users, but rather reflected Sony's concerns that the Other OS feature might be used by 'hackers' to copy and/or steal gaming and other content." The suit alleged Sony for violating California's Unfair Competition Law by restricting the PS3's functionalities via "forcing consumers to choose between the Other OS function and the Other Advertised Features impaired by Update 3.21."


Ventura seeks compensation and legal fees from this lawsuit but no fixed amount was mentioned. However, the suit does state that the amount in controversy is in excess of $5 million.

PS3 3.30 Firmware Update AVAILABLE!

Most notably, you’ll see some new sorting options within Trophies that make it easier to claim bragging rights among your friends on PlayStation Network.

• Trophy enhancements - Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

• Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

• Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

• Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

PS3 Firmware 3.21

I have already updated my console to the new 3.21 Firmware update from Sony and there is one issue with regards to the Media Streaming. UPnP unavailable but not because of Sony's update just my router being too old.

For those of you who are wondering, yes there is no more other OS support but other than that it is much faster. My internet connection is faster, my games load faster (I tried all my BDs one at a time and they load up faster MAYBE just me) and best of all it's like falling in love all over again. Yes, the darn 2006 console feels new and rejuvenated.

So, if you guys aren't worried to much about "The Other OS" feature, my recommendation is go for the update. Sure, you lose the feature but how many use the feature much anyway? My 2 and a half cents.

The latest Sony PS3 3.21 firmware is available for download now.

PS3 firmware updates normally bring new features, but this time around it’s removing a feature.

The ability to install another OS is a feature that was unique to the PS3. Keyword being was. You once were able to install Linux onto your PS3 to use it as a super computer.

Thanks to Geohot, the hacker responsible for first cracking the iPhone and now the PS3, this option has been removed. Geohot aka George Hotz found an exploit in the PS3’s “Other OS” feature which prompted Sony to remove the feature.

This is yet another case of hackers and pirates ruining the fun for others who legitimately wanted to use another OS on their PS3.

I am a Hardcore gamer and love games, but sometimes it is hard to get pre-loved (used) Bluray Disc games for a small price.
