Sony Being Sued?

Sony had pulled the plug from 'Other OS' feature in PlayStation 3 console with firmware 3.21 update that created quite a ruckus last month. Disappointed with that move, Anthony Ventura from California has filed a suit against Sony for "intentional disablement of the valuable functionality originally advertised as available" in the PlayStation 3 console, reported IGN. Lawsuit says that Sony's act of removing 'Other OS' support was more concerned with potential piracy.


However, Sony had clearly stated that the removal of Other OS feature was simply for security reasons. That didn't scare PS3 hackers as GeoHot demonstrated custom firmware for retaining 'Other OS' support on PS3.


The lawsuit states, "On information and belief, contrary to Sony's statement, the 'security concerns' did not involve a threat to PS3 users, but rather reflected Sony's concerns that the Other OS feature might be used by 'hackers' to copy and/or steal gaming and other content." The suit alleged Sony for violating California's Unfair Competition Law by restricting the PS3's functionalities via "forcing consumers to choose between the Other OS function and the Other Advertised Features impaired by Update 3.21."


Ventura seeks compensation and legal fees from this lawsuit but no fixed amount was mentioned. However, the suit does state that the amount in controversy is in excess of $5 million.

PS3 3.30 Firmware Update AVAILABLE!

Most notably, you’ll see some new sorting options within Trophies that make it easier to claim bragging rights among your friends on PlayStation Network.

• Trophy enhancements - Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

• Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

• Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

• Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA TVs.

PS3 Firmware 3.21

I have already updated my console to the new 3.21 Firmware update from Sony and there is one issue with regards to the Media Streaming. UPnP unavailable but not because of Sony's update just my router being too old.

For those of you who are wondering, yes there is no more other OS support but other than that it is much faster. My internet connection is faster, my games load faster (I tried all my BDs one at a time and they load up faster MAYBE just me) and best of all it's like falling in love all over again. Yes, the darn 2006 console feels new and rejuvenated.

So, if you guys aren't worried to much about "The Other OS" feature, my recommendation is go for the update. Sure, you lose the feature but how many use the feature much anyway? My 2 and a half cents.

The latest Sony PS3 3.21 firmware is available for download now.

PS3 firmware updates normally bring new features, but this time around it’s removing a feature.

The ability to install another OS is a feature that was unique to the PS3. Keyword being was. You once were able to install Linux onto your PS3 to use it as a super computer.

Thanks to Geohot, the hacker responsible for first cracking the iPhone and now the PS3, this option has been removed. Geohot aka George Hotz found an exploit in the PS3’s “Other OS” feature which prompted Sony to remove the feature.

This is yet another case of hackers and pirates ruining the fun for others who legitimately wanted to use another OS on their PS3.
